It’s been a while,

Aiming to construct and operate a community swimming pool and leisure centre in Lockerbie for the benefit of the mid and upper Annandale communities.

It’s been a while,

You may have thought as things have been quiet, the idea of building a pool in the area had lost momentum. The truth couldn’t be further from that and the last eighteen months or so have been filled with a lot of exciting plans and activities culminating in the achievement of several key milestones in the delivery of the project.
Since we last got in touch in 2014, we have now received, collated and analysed the community survey and this has been used to direct the design for the new pool. This information was passed to our designers as part of their brief.

At the end of 2014 we were excited to finalise the designs for the pool building, which will be located behind the ice rink on Glasgow Road, Lockerbie. The building will include two swimming pools, soft play, climbing wall, dance studio, Gym, multi use room, café and outdoor space. The pool has a therapeutic use and a range of health treatments will be offered.

The building design is shown below, in the architectural images.

In addition to carrying out the community survey and commissioning the design proposals the trust carried out a number of studies on the site at the end of 2014 including a topographical survey, a site investigation and a flood risk assessment.
We also appointed a Quantity Surveyor to prepare a full Budget Cost Plan for the proposals to help us in finalising our fund raising plans. The budget cost has been identified as £4million for the construction of the pool facility and associated infrastructure and services.
Planning Permission for the pool was granted in 2015 on the chosen site Behind the Ice Rink on Glasgow Road in Lockerbie. This was an exciting time for us as it cemented the proposals and gave us something tangible to demonstrate to Funders.
The business plan for the pool was revisited and finalised early in 2015 and demonstrates a financially viable proposal once constructed.
We appointed a fundraising co-ordinator early in 2015 whose role is to identify and apply for funding from a variety of different funding sources, such as the big lottery fund and other organisations.
In addition to monies available to us in the amount of £500k we have been able to identify potential funding sources for an additional £2.5million leaving us to find just over £1million to realise this dream for our community.
The beginning of this year has got off to a fantastic start with Dumfries & Galloway Council agreeing to sell the land to the trust for £1 in order to build the pool. This is subject to a number of conditions of course, not least that we have the funds in place to build it before the sale happens.
The priority for us now is to raise the funds necessary to build the pool. We have a programme of fund raising events for the year which can be found on our Facebook page. If you fancy joining us at one of our events please pop down to any one of them. We are also continuing to identify partnerships and other funding ideas to bring in that much needed money.
We have also reached a point where we need to find a name for the pool and we have recently asked you all for any ideas. If you feel you have a good idea for a name please let us know by clicking below and sending us your suggestion.
Submit your name
Once we have a name we’ll be creating a new brand identity for the pool based around that name, so get those idea’s submitted and you could see your words brought to life in our future branding!
We will also be revisiting our business plan this year to ensure it is still current. We have also been offered non financial assistance from Dumfries & Galloway Council which we hope will assist us with this exercise.
So, how can I help?
Well, we thought you’d never ask!
Do you want to see the new pool built?
Do you want to use the facilities once they are built and would like a say in what is delivered?
Do you have the energy and creativity to help bring this to life over the next couple of years?
Can you spare a couple of hours a month to help us out, whether it’s just bringing fresh ideas, new skills or just a pair of hands at fundraising events?
If you would like to get involved, we’d love to hear from you! Drop us a line on our email or on Facebook or Twitter. If you’d also like to see what we’re doing in person feel free to pop into our trust meetings which are generally held on the first Wednesday of each month at Lockerbie Town Hall.
